Toby and Sophie’s Relaxed Rye Wedding
This wedding was particularly close to home. Toby is my wife’s brother, so I already knew many of the friendships, family stories and moments behind the day.
It began at The Ypres Castle Inn, where Toby and his groomsmen shared a quiet drink before walking through Rye to St Mary’s Church. I photographed the morning on digital and 35mm film, keeping things simple and letting the day unfold around me.
St Mary’s Church and Rye
The ceremony was warm, traditional and unexpectedly funny. Afterwards, everyone gathered outside for confetti before walking back through the cobbled streets together.
Rather than disappearing for a long portrait session, Sophie and Toby stayed with their guests. I made a few photographs along the way, but mostly focused on the movement, conversations and atmosphere around them.
The George in Rye
The reception took place at The George in Rye, whose Georgian rooms and patterned interiors gave the day plenty of character.
The speeches moved between humour and something more personal, particularly when Toby spoke about Sophie and paid tribute to his mum.
By the evening, the ballroom had become a crowded dance floor. I worked close to the action, allowing the movement, changing light and occasional imperfections to remain part of the photographs.
What I remember most is the contrast: a quiet morning in the old town, a traditional ceremony, a thoughtful dinner and a very full dance floor.
If you are planning a wedding at The George in Rye or elsewhere in East Sussex, I would love to hear what you have in mind.
